Red equality boxes flood social media with same-sex marriage support
Some of your friends did it. They changed their profile pictures to a red box with a pink “equals” sign. The logo is spreading like wildfire across social media.
Originally blue and gold, the now red logo symbolizes love and support for marriage equality and it’s getting millions of shares.
The viral movement, kicked off by the Human Rights Campaign, or HRC, dominates Facebook and Twitter this week. The HRC encouraged its more than 1 million Facebook fans to wear red and post the red equality box online as the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments in two gay marriage cases Prop 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA.
At 11 Wednesday morning, an estimated 9,000 tweets with “#doma” hit the Twittersphere. There were about 5,000 tweets with “#scotus” 24 hours earlier.
On Facebook, locals posted photos with captions reading “Get equal!”
Even singer Beyonce sported her support sharing an Instagram photo with Facebook her fans. It was a handwritten note on red paper that reads “If you like it you should be able to put a ring on it.”
In between the lines there was still some opposition popping up on the feeds. Opponents say marriage “equals” a man and a woman and others, say “God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve.”
For or against the issue, millions of social media users are taking a stance.
