Powerball tickets go on sale in California

At La Quinta Liquor on Monday, there was a steady line of people buying Powerball tickets as they went on sale for the first time in California.

Powerball jackpots start at $40 million. The jackpot this week is currently $60 million.

California is the 43rd state to join the Powerball lottery and although the odds of hitting the jackpot are one in 175 million, it’s not enough to discourage some people.

“They are pretty long odds, but you’re never going to win if you don’t play, so what’s a few dollars here and there for your chances?” said Linda Andrews who purchased Powerball tickets at La Quinta Liquor.

Drawings are held Wednesdays and Saturdays.

It’s estimated Powerball sales could generate as much as $120 million each year in California, with between $50 and $100 million going toward public education.
