27 arrests on Day 2 of Coachella
Public drunkenness, disorderly conduct and similar offenses led to 27 arrests on the second day of the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, an Indio police spokesman said.
“The majority arrested were alcohol- and drug-related, but there were no significant issues,” Indio Police Department Public Information Officer Ben Guitron. “Vehicular traffic has been good. Pedestrian traffic has been good. No challenges from our end.”
Guitron said the arrest tally covers the period beginning 10 a.m. Saturday and concluding around 3 a.m. today.’
“We’re pleased with how things are going. We’ve been doing this for almost 14 years. We follow a template and every year we improve on it,” Guitron said.
Along with the Indio Police Department, the California Highway Patrol, Desert Hot Springs, Palm Springs and Cathedral City police were providing law
enforcement services for the festival, which is being held at the 78-acre
Empire Polo Club grounds. It concludes next weekend.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers are slated to play today, along with Social Distortion, Eric Prydz and the Wu-Tang Clan.
The two-weekend festival will be repeated Friday through next Sunday. Both weekends are sold out.
Here’s a rundown on road closings in Indio:
— Avenue 49 between Hjorth and Monroe streets;
— Avenue 50 between Madison and Jackson streets; and
— Hjorth between avenues 49 and 50 and Madison between avenues 49 and 52
Delays are expected on Washington, Jefferson, and Monroe streets and
Highway 111.
