Coachella: Weekend two getting underway

Another wave of festivalgoers will fill Indio’s Empire Polo Club today for the second weekend of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

The festival, which is sold out, runs through Sunday. The lineup is the same as last weekend — the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Blur and the Stone Roses on Friday, Phoenix and the Postal Service on Saturday and the Red Hot Chili Pepper on Sunday. Friday’s first set is at 11:30 a.m. at the Sahara stage, one of six.

Past Coachella headliners include Paul McCartney, Jay-Z, Madonna, Prince, Kanye West, Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters, Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre.

Weather-wise, the Coachella Valley is under a red flag warning until 5 p.m. Friday, with strong winds and low humidity increasing the risk of wildfires. Temperatures were expected to reach a high of 86 on Friday and 94 on Saturday and Sunday. Winds were forecast to be around 5 mph, according to the National Weather Service. Last weekend, high winds buffeted the festival on Sunday.

Traffic delays are expected in and around Indio this weekend because of the three-day Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

The gates at the Empire Polo Club open at 11 a.m. today, and delays should be expected when traveling through Indio and La Quinta, Indio Community
Services Manager Jim Curtis said.

According to an economic impact analysis done last October by Development Management Group in Palm Desert, the economic impact in the Coachella Valley last year for both Coachella and the Stagecoach country music festival was $254.4 million — $89.21 million to Indio alone. Stagecoach is next weekend.

The festival’s website is http://www.coachella.com. Indio’s non-emergency concert hotline number is (760) 541-7800.
