Son reportedly takes mother hostage during 8 hour standoff with police
A man accused of holding his mother hostage surrendered to authorities Thursday night after an 8 hour standoff in Coachella.
It all began when Riverside County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to a home on the 84900 block of Calle Verde at 10:35 Thursday morning.
A woman told deputies she thought her son fired a gun inside their home. According to Riverside County Sheriff’s Cpl. Angel Ramos, no one was injured.
Ramos said the woman “believes her son is crazy” and thought he had ahandgun. The mother eventually escaped the home around 4:30 p.m. and was taken away by ambulance with minor injuries.
During the standoff, homes were evacuated on Calle Camacho in Coachella and a crisis management team worked all day to try to get the man to surrender. The Riverside County Emergency Task Force (S.W.A.T. team) was also at the scene.
Peter Pendleton Elementary School, Olive Crest Academy, and Valley View were reportedly put on lockdown, but students were released later in the day.
The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Jacob Nunez, was taken into custody, and will be charged with several felonies.
