Latest on Hathaway Fire near Banning

The U.S. Forest Service revised its estimate forcontaining The Hathaway Fire in the San Gorgonio Wilderness because of wherethe fire is burning.

The estimated date for full containment — it had been 95 percentcontained, or surrounded, on Sunday — is now open-ended or undetermined.

The northeastern head of the fire is burning in a rocky, hard-to-accessarea, according to Forest Service firefighters.

The Hathaway Fire started June 9 in the northern reaches of the MorongoIndian Reservation and has scorched about 3,825 acres, according to the ForestService.

Full containment had been projected for today, but Forest Servicespokeswoman Carol Underhill said it was now “undetermined.”

“The 5 percent uncontained at this point borders a very rocky linewhere they can’t construct a fire line, it’s just rocks … so it’ll beawhile,” she told City News Service. “It could be a week or two down theroad, it could be even longer.”

She said fire officials don’t expect the fire to move or grow. About 50firefighters and a helicopter crew are still working on the fire, she said.

“Basically they’re just mopping up,” she said.

One outbuilding was destroyed, and 12 firefighters reported minor injuries.
