Man shot and killed by police in Hemet
A driver who led authorities on an approximately four-minute chase after they tried to pull him over for a traffic violation was killed by police in Hemet today after he got out of his car and pulled a gun, according to a sheriff’s deputy and a broadcast report.
The chase began when members of a gang task force tried to stop a silver Toyota at Acacia Avenue and Yale Street in Hemet at 3:12 p.m., said Deputy Albert Martinez of the Riverside Sheriff’s Department.
The chase ended when the suspect stopped in the 40300 block of Mayberry Avenue. The suspect got out of the car, which was when the deputy-involved shooting occurred, Martinez said.
The man was shot after he pulled a gun, reported KCAL9, whose sister station CBS2 identified him as William McCullough, 30.
He was the sole occupant of the car and was declared dead at the scene.
Witnesses told CBS2 that they heard at least 25 shots.
The Hemet Police Department was also involved, Martinez said.
