UPDATE: Police standoff in Palm Springs ends

A five-hour long standoff ended Friday night outside of the St. Tropez Villas, located at the corner of Calle El Segundo and Alejo, in Palm Springs.

Police responded to reports of a suspicious woman inside the complex. Arriving, they discovered the woman and a man inside of a garage, burglarizing one of the condos. Officers arrested the woman for burglary and possession of a fire arm. They believed the man barricaded himself inside.

“The man ran inside and officers believed he may have been armed,” said Sgt. Harvey Reed, spokesman for the Palm Springs Dept.

Unsure if the man was still in the home, officers took action, surrounded the condominiums and evacuated nearby homes.

The commotion of police officers, a SWAT team and fire arms was an unsettling sight for nearby resident Steve Harris.

“It’s a little unnerving that it’s happening in such a quiet part of the neighborhood,” he said.

At approximately 6:30 p.m., the agencies fired multiple gas grenades into the home, but there was no response.

Finally around 7:45 p.m., the stand off came to an end.

“SWAT officers concluded the subject was not inside. We determined the situation is over,” said Reed.

Police haven’t released the name of the man they are still looking for or a description of him.
