The City of Indio isn’t hosting a fireworks show this year (sorry folks)

It wouldn’t be a Fourth of July celebration without a little fireworks flare and color. You’ll spot Safe and Sane fireworks stands around the desert. What you won’t find is the city of Indio hosting a fireworks show of its own.

“It’s sad, but there are other shows around that we can take advantage of,” said Frank Hermes, of Indio.

Arby Rosellon, of Indio, says, “I usually go to (College of the Desert) to watch fireworks over there.”

Due to funding, the city stopped its fireworks displays back in 2010. City leader Glenn Miller said a single show costs the city between $25,000 and $100,000.
Miller said that was money that’s helped end furlough days, focus on public safety and balance Indio’s budget.

Miller said the Fantasy Springs Casino fireworks display in Indio, which will be held Wednesday night, July 3, has been a go-to for many residents.

“The city’s booming a lot. I would hope the city makes more events for the Fourth of July,” said Rosellon.

There is some good news: Indio is looking to hire a big promoter, possibly Goldenvoice, the producer of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and the Stagecoach Country Music Festival, to take over and develop other festivals around the city by next year — a fireworks show and celebration on July Fourth included.

For now, look forward to what’s to come and stay away from illegal fireworks.

“They’re not safe at all, especially for kids. Come to the stands and support your local firework shop. Support the community as well,” said Rosellon.
