Coachella man facing DUI charges after leaving scene of a crash

A Coachella man is facing DUI charges Friday morning after taking off from the scene of a crash on Thursday.

Police responded to a report of a wreck about 10:30 p.m. at Fredrick Street and Bellissima Avenue in Coachella. When officers arrived, the driver had already left the scene.

Twenty-two-year-old William Calderon was taken into custody a short time later when he tried to report the vehicle stolen.

Investigators say Calderon was driving north on Frederick Street from Avenue 54 when he hit the east curb causing the air bags to deploy and disabling the vehicle.

He was transported to John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital as a precaution and booked at Riverside County Jail in Indio for driving while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and hit-and-run.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact the Coachella Police Department at 760-863-8990 oranonymously through Crime Stoppers at 760-341-STOP (7867).
