Palm Springs Airport begins using new air traffic control tower
Planes landing at Palm Springs International Airport are now under a new watchful eye.
The long awaited air traffic control tower in Palm Springs came on line yesterday, according to the FAA. The first flight landed at 6 a.m. Wednesday morning.
Construction of the tower began in June of 2010 and cost $24.5 million, some of that money streamlined by funds from the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2009.
The FAA is not granting media access to the new tower until controllers familiarize themselves with the new high techequipment, but assures us that we will get a first hand look of the new tower within the next few months.
The smaller, older control tower has been at Palm Springs Airport since 1967.
