Costumed cop catches crosswalk violators

Eight motorists were cited for failing to yield to an undercover sheriff’s deputy as he crossed a Moreno Valley street corner dressed as a traffic cone, a sergeant said.

Six other motorists received citations for speeding in a school zone and four vehicles were impounded and towed during the hour-long decoy operation at Eucalyptus Avenue and Running Deer Road, Riverside County sheriff’s Sgt. Lee Tainter said.

The 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. operation was conducted in response to complaints from residents about motorists who fail to stop for pedestrians at crosswalks and intersections throughout Moreno Valley.

The deputy was dressed in the traffic cone costume to make him more visible, Tainter said. Many of the motorists who were stopped told deputies they didn’t see the costumed deputy in the crosswalk, Tainter said.
