CHP joins nationwide challenge to keep I-10 fatality free this Labor Day Weekend
As part of a nationwide effort to prevent traffic fatalities over Labor Day weekend, the California Highway Patrol will beintensifying enforcement activity on Interstate 10, joining multiple law enforcement agencies in other states that will be doing the same thing along the roughly 2,450-mile route.
The “I-10 Challenge” will begin shortly after midnight Friday and continue to 11:59 p.m. Monday, with the objective of “zero fatalities” along the heavily traveled corridor that spans eight states, from California on the west coast to Florida on the east.
About 150 miles of the interstate traverses Riverside County, from Cherry Valley to Blythe.
“We are excited to partner with highway patrol agencies across the nation and challenge the people of California to drive safe this Labor Day holiday weekend,” said CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow. “We hope to accomplish our goal by educating motorists about the leading causes of traffic collisions and encouraging the people of California to follow the rules of the road and
drive safely.”
According to the CHP, a person is killed in a crash an average of every four days on I-10 in California.
The I-10 Challenge was inspired by a similar campaign successfully conducted by the Florida Highway Patrol along Interstate 80.
During this weekend’s effort, the CHP will be aggressively ticketing traffic violators — with particular attention paid to DUI suspects, speeders and “distracted drivers,” according to the agency.
The campaign will be a component of the CHP’s Labor Day weekend “maximum enforcement period,” during which all available officers hit the streets to nab lawbreakers.
