Taquitz Canyon reopens to public

Tahquitz Canyon near Palm Springs reopened todayafter being closed for more than a week by flood damage, while the IndianCanyons remained closed, authorities said.

The canyons — owned and maintained by the Agua Caliente Band ofCahuilla Indians — were damaged by downpours last week and closed on Sept. 5.Trees, boulders and mud covered trails and roads, Agua Caliente spokeswomanKate Anderson said.

The Indian Canyons are closed until further notice due to “extensivedamage” in the area, Anderson said. She said Agua Caliente rangers andemergency management workers continue to assess the aftermath of the flooding.

The canyons cover more than 50 square miles and have more than 60 milesof trails. They were closed temporarily in July when the Mountain Fireblackened more than 6,000 acres on the Agua Caliente reservation.
