Four more mosquitoes test positive for West Nile in Palm Springs

Vector Control announced today four more mosquitoes tested positive for West Nile virus in Palm Springs. These mosqitoes were found in traps n ear the intersections of E Paseo El Mirador and Pasatiempo Rd, E Cottonwood Rd and N Via Miraleste, E Via Altamira and N Indian Canyon D, and E Vista Chino and N Palm Canyon Dr.

This brings the total number of WNV-positive mosquitoes in the Coachella Valley to 41. At this time last year, that number was 109.

While this is good news for the Coachella Valley, it is a bit disconcerting for residents in Palm Springs. Last year, zero WNV-positive mosquitoes were found in within the city’s limits.

In response, Vector Control ” will perform barrier treatments in and around residential areas where positive samples were detected,” according to a press release from the agency. The treatments will be carried out this Wednesday and Thursday.

The agency also provided these three tips to reduce the risk of becoming infected with West Nile:

— Eliminate standing water because that’s where mosquitoes breed.
— Avoid outdoor activities when mosquitoes are most active.
— Apply insect repellents with EPA-registered active ingredients such as DEET and Picaridin and wear long-sleeve shirts and pants when outdoors. Utilize properly fitted and well maintained screens on windows and doors around your home.
