Police gave up in their search Thursday night for a gunman after being unable to locate any suspects nearby.

Officers reported shots fired in the wash area between Palm Springs and Cathedral Cityaround 7:30 p.m. while investigating a possible stolen vehicle.

A number of viewers called the News Channel 3 newsroom to report heavy police activity near Ramon Road and Landau in Cathedral City.

A helicopter was being used to help in the search, and police surrounded a nearby home on the west side of the wash in the Dream Homes Development where a suspect was thought to be hiding.

A search of the home turned up nothing.

Police say officers were called from several communities to aid in the search effort including Indio, Palm Springs, Desert Hot Springs, the Riverside County Sheriffs Department and the California Highway Patrol.

A Cathedral City police dispatcher confirmed Ramon Road was closed briefly.
