Documentary about soldiers graves shown in Palm Springs

A documentary about soldiers who died liberating Belgium during World War II and locals who have tended their graves will be shown Wednesday in Palm Springs.

Producer, director and World War II veteran George Ciampa will attend the screening of “They Will Never Forget,” scheduled for 1 p.m. at Mizell Senior Center.

“They Will Never Forget” is Ciampa’s fourth documentary about those who fought to liberate Europe during World War II.

The film focuses on several people who have watched over American soldiers’ graves in Henri-Chapelle American Military Cemetery in Belgium, around 20 miles east of Liege.

The “adopters” in the documentary range in age from 7 to 90 and live near the cemetery, according to Ciampa’s website.

The 88-year-old Ciampa, who served in five campaigns in Belgium, France and Germany, was assigned to help bury soldiers during the war at temporary cemeteries, including Henri-Chapelle. The soldiers’ remains were later buried in an adjacent, permanent cemetery built after the war, according to the documentary’s website.

Nearly 8,000 Americans are interred at Henri-Chapelle.

The screening is part of the American Documentary Film Festival’s series of year-round film screenings, according to spokesman Michael Green.

The screening is free for Mizell members and $5 for non-members.
