Police have person of interest after skateboarder killed in hit & run

It’s been more than a month since 28-year-old Abelardo Garcia was killed in a hit and run crash while riding his skateboard on Palm Drive and Third Street. Now, Desert Hot Springs police have a person of interest in connection to the crime.

Detective Jim Henson said the department is waiting for evidence to come back from the crime lab. The person of interest is not in custody and police haven’t released an identity yet.

Garcia was killed in the early morning hours of December, 3. The vehicle in the crash was found unoccupied in Desert Hot Springs a few days after the hit and run.

Police received a number of tips from witnesses that helped them locate the vehicle. The investigation is ongoing and we’ll deliver more details when police evaluate the evidence from the crime lab.
