Flu deaths in California jump to 95

California health officials say 95 people have died from the flu this season, double the number from a week ago.

The latest figures were released Friday and point to the severity of the flu season, which typically peaks in February or March.

Sacramento County recorded 10 flu deaths, the most of any county.

An additional 51 deaths around the state are under investigation. On January, 9, health officials announced a 30-year-old Coachella Valley man died after testing positive for the H1N1 strain of influenza, also known as swine flu.

Riverside County health officials urged people to get vaccinated in the wake of the man’s death.

The state only counts flu-related deaths among people younger than 65. Last year, the state recorded 106 flu deaths.

Health officials say there’s vaccine left and said it’s important for people to get immunized.
