Cheerleaders compete in the Desert

More than 6,500 cheerleaders and dancers are expected to compete at the Palm Springs Convention Center this weekend.

The Spirit Sports “Duel in the Desert” Cheer & Dance National Championships will be open to the public.

Local team Desert Elite Mavericks, formerly Desert Valley All Star Mavericks (DVAS), are already heading to NCA All-Star Nationals. They will be competing over the weekend.

The competition starts Saturday, Feb. 1, at 8 a.m. at the Palm Springs Convention Center at 277 N. Avenida Caballeros.

The two-day competition draws cheerleaders and dancers from several countries, and about 14,000 people are expected to attend, according to the Palm Springs Bureau of Tourism.

Admission for adults is $15 for one day or $25 for two days; admission for those 5-12 years old is $10 for one day or $20 for two days. Children under 5 are free.
