Modernism Week tours cancelled due to President Obama’s visit to the Valley

President Barack Obama will be in town next month on Valentine’s Day to meet with King Abdullah II of Jordan. The meeting will close down the Sunnylands Estate in Rancho Mirage from Feb. 10-17.

It turns out some of those dates coincide with the start of Palm Springs Modernism Week and wipes out five days of tours at Sunnylands booked by 200-300 Modernism Week ticket holders.

Organizers of Modernism Week are being understanding, considering the estate is being closed to handle security for two world leaders.

“We’re actually in the process of refunding everybody and for the most part everybody is OK with it,” said Chris Mobley, chairman of Modernism Week. “They’re pretty excited the president is coming to town, nobody has really thrown up their hands or anything.”

The Sunnylands tours are among more than 170 different outings or events featured during Modernism Week, which runs from Feb. 13-23.
