One killed, one seriously injured in rollover wreck

A motorist was killed and his passenger was seriously injured Monday in a rollover crash near La Sierra University in Riverside.

The wreck happened about 11:25 a.m. at the intersection of Raley Drive and Riverwalk Parkway, outside the south entrance to the campus, according to the Riverside Fire Department.

“A vehicle hit a pole,” Division Chief Mitch Wesche said. “The car was cut in half.”

The driver, whose identity was not immediately released, was pronounced dead at the scene. The front-seat passenger was partially ejected from the vehicle, suffering major injuries, according to reports from the scene.

The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Riverside police shut down the intersection to conduct an investigation into how the crash happened. The closure was expected to last several hours, authorities said.
