Hall of Fame slugger Ralph Kiner dies at 91

The baseball Hall of Fame says slugger Ralph Kiner has died. He was 91.

The Hall says Kiner died Thursday at his home in Rancho Mirage.

KESQ & CBS Local 2 spoke with Kiner’s son Scott. He said his father passed away at 10 a.m. from congestive heart failure.

Kiner hit 369 home runs during his 10-year career, mostly with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He won or tied for the National League lead in homers in each of his first seven seasons.

After finishing up as a player, Kiner became a popular broadcaster with the New York Mets for more than a half-century. He worked a handful of games last year.

Aside from being a baseball great, Kiner was also well-known for his way with words. Here are some of his notable quotes compiled by CBS Sports:

“You know what they say about Chicago. If you don’t like the weather, wait 15 minutes.”
“All of his saves have come in relief appearances.”
“All of the Mets road wins against the Dodgers this year occurred at Dodgers Stadium.”
“Cadillacs are down at the end of the bat.”
“Darryl Strawberry has been voted to the Hall of Fame five years in a row.”
“If Casey Stengel were alive today, he’d be spinning in his grave.”
“I think one of the most difficult things for anyone who’s played baseball is to accept the fact that maybe the players today are playing just as well as ever.”
