Bicyclist killed in Thermal during Tour de Palm Springs identified

The Corner’s office identified her as 55-year-oldLavonneKoester of Alta Loma.

Earlier:

A bicyclist was struck and killed Saturday by a truck hauling a trailer in Thermal, the California Highway Patrol reported.

CHP officers were dispatched at 12:12 p.m. to the corner of 60th Avenue and Harrison Street where the incident happened.

CHP reports a 55-year-old female from Alta Loma, CA was riding a Cannondale bicycle westbound on 60th Avenue, approaching the intersection with Harrison Street when she was hit by a 1999 Dodge truck.

According to CHP, a 28-year-old male from Aiken, SC was driving the truck southbound on Harrison Street when the bicyclist rode directly in front of him.

The bicyclist was thrown from the bicycle and suffered major injuries. The bicyclist was transported to JFK Memorial Hospital, where she subsequently succumbed to her injuries.

CHP reports the bicyclist was participating in the 100 mile route of the Tour De Palm Springs cycling event at the time of this collision.

This cycling event takes place on public roadways, which are not closed to vehicular traffic during the event.

The riders are required to obey all rules and regulations of the roadways while participating in this event.
