Shops return to Indio plaza after 2012 fire

Fire ripped through the attic, and down into six businesses at Kristen Plaza on Highway 111 and Monroe in Indio August 24, 2012.

The plaza was deemed a “total loss” by CalFire.

Now, the strip is waiting for a fresh coat of paint.

Mayor Michael Wilson says the goal is for the plaza to be open and in business by the end of August, two years to the month from when the complex burned down.

“We obviously worked with them as fast as we could to get the permits, and get them under construction,” says Wilson.

Those missing Frankie’s Fresh Fish, the Chinese Restaurant, or the Taco Shop, may be in luck.

“In talking to the ownership of the building, and the leasee agent, they expect the prior owners will all be back,” confirms Wilson. “That includes the Chinese Restaurant, taco shop, and other fine food establishments.”

Wilson says it’s a testament to the growth and loyalty businesses have to the city of Indio, and the city’s business environment.

Locals, including Wally Green, say the resurgence will liven up the area.

“It’s good to see the new development coming back,” he says, “and it’s gotta[sic] be good for the local economy. So I’m glad to see that.”

CalFire has not said what caused the fire, but they have ruled out arson or foul play.
