New SunLine Transit facility to better host operators, riders
SunLine Transit Agency is getting a sneak peek of its new facilities.
The company’s new office and services complex is near completion on Haskill Road in Thousand Palms.
Tuesday, crews escorted city leaders and STA board members out to the construction site. There, they signed their names on a steel beam as a symbol of permanence in the community, says General Manager Lauren Skiver.
“SunLine is operating in a facility that was meant to be temporary, but has actually lasted for 36 years,” she explains, “Though it is beautiful, through the efforts in our facilities group, it is time to move in to a new facility so that we can continue good transit service to the Coachella Valley.”
Local leaders and STA board members present for the signing were STA Chairman and Councilman Glenn Miller of Indio, STA Vice-Chair and Councilman Greg Pettis of Cathedral City, Mayor Don Adolf of La Quinta, and Mayor Pro-Tem Russell Betts of Desert Hot Springs, among others.
After the ceremony, Miller conducted the Pledge of Allegiance to remember two California Highway Patrol officers killed Monday in the line of duty. A flag was raised at the site to remember them and the members of our armed forces.
The signed beam will be set in the entry way of a building, although the names will be covered.
In addition to office space, SunLine will open a new Park-and-Ride lot, with a lot big enough to hold about 100 cars. The new area will allow for more than one entrance and exit to the bus drivers, which current facilities do not have.
Full occupancy of the new facilities is set for October of this year.
