New baby giraffe born at The Living Desert

The pregnant giraffe at The Living Desert, Dadisi, gave birth to a healthy boy giraffe early Friday morning. Her pregnancy lasted close to 15 months, which is the typical amount of time for a giraffe, according to zoo officials.

They said the baby giraffe was born at 2:52 a.m. He weighs 128 lbs. and stands 5’9″ tall. He was standing up within an hour of his birth.

He’s expected to double in size within the first year of his life. Officials said he will nurse for 9 to 12 months and begin eating foliage when he’s close to 4 months-old.

Zookeepers said no two giraffes have the same pattern of spots, similar to humans having unique fingerprints.

“We closely watched Dadisi’s progress through her pregnancy and are proud to welcome and introduce a thriving baby giraffe to the community,” said Allen Monroe, President and CEO of The Living Desert.

The zoo held a contest to guess the birth date and time of the new baby giraffe. The winner, who will be announced soon, will receive a private giraffe feeding experience for a total of eight people, a family membership to The Living Desert for one year and a commemorative giraffe plush.

Officials will soon announce more details regarding a baby shower to celebrate the newest member of The Living Desert’s family.

The Living Desert is located at 47900 Portola Avenue in Palm Desert.
