Bike to school day in Palm Springs
Local students will ride to school Wednesday as part of national Bike to School Day and Bike Month in Palm Springs.
Cielo Vista Elementary School students met at Demuth Park to pedal to school.
Palm Springs Cyclery conducted bike safety checks and do adjustments.
The Palm Springs Sustainability Commission was on hand to help with organization and awareness, as well.
“If you teach them young, if you show them how to be safe, how to treat their bike, they will turn into fabulous teenagers, fabulous adults, and they are going to love biking,” says PSSC Chair Brett Klein, “and that’s the whole idea.”
The first Bike to School Day was held two years ago to promote “active transportation” to school, according to the campaign’s website, which also promotes walking to school.
More events are planned later this month, which is Bike Month in Palm Springs:
Saturday, May 10, 8 a.m.: Bike Festival at Sunrise Park and Boys & Girls Club. A children’s bike rodeo is planned.
May 12-16: Bike to Work Week. People are encouraged to pedal to work. The official bike to work day is May 16. May 15, 6 p.m.: Palm Springs Cycledelic Full Moon Bike Ride. Cyclists will meet at the northwest corner of Tahquitz Canyon Way and Palm Canyon Drive and take a nighttime ride.
