Explosion at Calif. explosives plant brings alarm

An explosion at an explosives plant sounds like a dog-bites-dog story, but this one had people alarmed.

The Riverside Press-Enterprise reports that Alpha Explosives regularly tests its products at its Southern California facility, but the company set off a bigger-than-usual blast on Thursday.

Corona Fire Department spokeswoman Lynn Mata said the explosion just outside city limits had windows shaking and the switchboard lighting up with worried residents.

Mata said the company was told to give notice to the Fire Department the next time such a blast is about to happen.

The company website says it provides explosives for mines, quarries and construction sites around the western U.S. An after-hours phone message left seeking comment was not immediately returned.
