Two Actresses to Join Palm Springs Walk of Stars
Lynda Carter, television’s original “Wonder Woman,” and the late actress Jane Wyman will receive stars on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars this weekend.
Carter, who starred in the series about the female superhero in the 1970s, will get a star today at 4 p.m. at 515 N. Palm Canyon Drive.
Wyman, who won an Academy Award for her lead role in “Johnny Belinda” in 1949, will posthumously receive a star at 11 a.m. Sunday at 369 North Palm Canyon Drive, according to the Walk of Stars.
Carter, who grew up in Phoenix, moved to Los Angeles to study acting after winning the Miss World pageant in 1972. Three years later, she was cast as the lead in “Wonder Woman,” and the show ran from 1975 to 1979.
In 1977, she guest starred on “The Jackson Show” with Michael Jackson and his family. She headlined at venues in Las Vegas and elsewhere and released a solo album in 1978. She starred in and produced several television specials –two of which won Emmys in the early 1980s.
In 2005, she starred in the musical “Chicago” on London’s West End, and in 2007 had a successful tour of her cabaret show, “An Intimate Evening With Lynda Carter.” Her 2008 album “At Last” reached No. 6 on Billboards jazz charts.
Carter is an LGBT advocate and has served as grand marshal in pride parades around the country.
Wyman, who died in Rancho Mirage in 2007 at age 90, was nominated for an Oscar four times and won once.
Her career lasted six decades, bookended by an unaccredited appearance in the 1932 musical comedy “The Kid from Spain” and a 1993 episode of the television series “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman.”
She appeared in nearly 90 films on the big screen. Her small screen credits included starring in more than 200 episodes of the nighttime soap “Falcon Crest” in the 1980s and, early in her career, doing 49 installments of “Jane Wyman Presents The Fireside Theatre.”
The actress was married to Ronald Reagan from 1940 to 1948, and they had two children together.
She initially worked as a chorus girl and then got small parts, which helped support her family during the Great Depression. She moved to Palm Springs, then Rancho Mirage, and is buried in Cathedral City.
