Finale for Follies

The last week of performances for the Fabulous Palm Springs Follies’ final season gets underway Tuesday.

Darlene Love, who appeared in the Oscar-winning documentary “20 Feet From Stardom,” is guest starring through Sunday, when the Follies will close permanently. Love, 72, sang at the Academy Awards telecast in March.

Shows are scheduled tomorrow, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday at 1:30 p.m., with 7 p.m. shows, as well, on Wednesday and Saturday.

Love grew up in Hawthorne and sang in her church choir. In high school, she joined a girl group called the Blossoms, whose members were friendly with legendary producer Phil Spector, and they became session and tour backup singers for such stars as Frank Sinatra, the Righteous Brothers, Dionne Warwick, the Beach Boys, Marvin Gaye, Tom Jones and Elvis Presley, and also released singles.

Love has appeared on various television programs since the early 1960s, including an annual Christmas performance on “The Late Show with David Letterman.” She has also performed on stage, including on Broadway, starring as herself in 1985’s Tony Award-nominated “Leader of the Pack.” She also played Danny Glover’s wife in four “Lethal Weapon” movies.

In 2011, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and last year appeared in “20 Feet From Stardom,” which looks inside the world of backup singers. This year, the Oprah Winfrey Network acquired the television rights to Love’s memoir, “My Name Is Love: The Darlene Love Story.”

The Follies, whose cast members range in age from 55 to 84 and perform pieces from the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s, announced last June that its 23rd season would be its last. Susan Anton and Maureen McGovern guest-starred earlier this season.

The season is themed “The Last Hurrah!” and is a “greatest hits” run featuring the best dance numbers and variety acts of past years, according to producer and co-founder Riff Markowitz.

Tickets are available by calling (760) 327-0225, at www.psfollies.com or at the box office, 128 S. Palm Canyon Drive.
