Palm Springs details requirements for reusable bag ordinance

Palm Springs is aiming to prepare shoppers and businesses for what lies ahead when the reusable bag ordinance goes into effect in November.

The city has launched a new website, Choose to Reuse Palm Springs, which details the requirements for the new Reusable Bag Program.

Through the website, residents and business owners can find information about single-use plastic bags in businesses, reusable bag suppliers, view FAQ’s, learn more about the ordinance itself and learn other ways to help the environment.

The Office of Sustainability developed a new grant incentive program to encourage businesses to switch from unsustainable packaging, such as plastic bags or Styrofoam, to biodegradable and compostable materials.

Officials said each participating business could be eligible to receive a grant of up to $500. The city wants to assist businesses to make the transition from plastic bags run as smoothly as possible.

The website can also help you find more information about green programs offered in Palm Springs.

The enforcement date for the reusable bag ordinance for large stores is November 3. Smaller businesses such as convenience and liquor stores would see the new restrictions May 3 of 2015.
