12 year old shooting suspect arrested

The Cathedral City Police Department arrested a 12 year old boy who’s accused of firing a gun at another juvenile on Monday, May 19.

The shooting happened in the area of Dinah Shore Drive and Linda Way, just south of Cathedral City High School, at about 3:50 p.m.

Authorities were called after residents in the area reported hearing shots fired.

Some students who witnessed part of the incident reported it to Cathedral City High School staff. They said there were two groups of juveniles involved in an altercation when one of the boys pulled a handgun.

Police said the boy fired the gun at another juvenile but the victim wasn’t hit. Officers searched the area but didn’t find the shooter or any evidence.

A few days later, police received a tip about who may have been involved. After conducting interviews and photographic lineups, officers said they identified a suspect.

The 12 year old boy is a resident of Cathedral City. He was arrested at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 28, and taken to Juvenile Hall in Indio.

Police said he’s facing charges of assault with a firearm with additional enhancements for violating the Gun-Free School Zone Act of 1995, which punishes for weapons violations within 1,000 feet of a public school.

The investigation is ongoing and police aren’t releasing anymore information at this time.
