Living Desert: Name baby zebra contest

If you have ever wanted to name a zebra, the Living Desert is giving you the opportunity.

Through the month of August, visitors to the zoo are eligible to vote on the name for the male zebra foal that was born on May 30 th . Guests will receive one ballot for every paid admission to vote on one of the five names selected by the Africa animal care staff.

Voters are invited to select from the following names:

Zuberi (pronounced Zoo-BERRY) African/Swahili for Strong
Jelani (pronounced Jeh-LAH-nee) Swahili for Mighty, Great/Powerful
Jasiri (pronounced Jah-ZEE-ree) Swahili for Bold
Xola (pronounced ZO-la) African for Stay in Peace
Joshi (pronounced JO-she) Swahili for Galloping

According to a news release from the Living Desert, Grevy zebras are endangered in the wild and The Living Desert is an active participant in the Grevy Zebra Species Survival Plan®.

This is the third foal for the zebra’s mom, Natalia, and first for the dad, Conrad. The Living Desert is currently home to two Grevy’s zebra mares and one stallion, plus the new, yet-to-be named foal.

The Living Desert is open 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. daily with the last admission at 1 p.m. General Admission is $17.25 Adults; $15.75 Seniors (62 and older) & Military; $8.75 Children ages 3-12; Children under 3 are Free.
