Stubborn fire smolders at Port of Los Angeles

A fire that forced evacuations from a wharf at the Port of Los Angeles continues to smolder but officials say it’s under control.

Nearly 12 hours after starting, the blaze is sending up a huge plume of smoke that is drifting over Los Angeles Harbor early Tuesday.

Los Angeles fire spokeswoman Katherine Main said about 150 firefighters had the bulk of the blaze contained about 2 hours after it broke out Monday night, but stubborn flames underneath the docks proved hard to reach.

The fire burned about 150 feet of a pier and forced the evacuation of more than 800 people and the removal of ships and boats from the area. No injuries were reported.
