City of Coachella to host new Day of the Dead music festival and more

The City of Coachella can’t boast about having big stores or resorts, but it can boast about its culture.

Three events will take over the city to celebrate Dia de los Muertos or the Day of the Dead the first weekend of November. The Mexican tradition celebrates life and honors loved ones who’ve passed on.

This year the city will partner with Luz Entertainment, an LA based music promoter, for the first “Dia de los Muertos USA” spectacular. It’s a two-day festival, Nov. 1 and Nov.2, featuring Latino musicians and mariachi bands, food vendors and art at Rancho Las Flores Park in Coachella.

“That is a large event we expect 12,000 people a day to attend,” said Becky Valadez, executive director at the Coachella Chamber of Commerce.

Ticket prices range from $35 to $360. The city hopes Dia de los Muertos USA will become one of Coachella’s signature event. For more information, go to www.diadelosmuertosusa.com

Also, on Nov. 1, more than 800 people will enjoy art and race through the city for the “Run with los Muertos” 5K run, starting at 6 p.m. on 6th Street in front of City Hall.

You’ll also find food and music at Forest Lawn’s annual Dia de Los Muertos event Nov. 2 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Coachella. The city hopes the weekend will draw in thousands of people from across the southland and country.

“It’s a weekend of firsts for some and a weekend of experience for others,” said Valadez.
