Family shot at while visiting relative’s grave in Cathedral City

The Cathedral City Police Department is investigating after a family was shot at several times while visiting the grave of a deceased relative Monday night.

The drive-by-shooting happened at Desert Memorial Park in the Palm Springs District Cemetery, located at 69920 Ramon Road in Cathedral City. According to a release from the C.C.P.D., two men in an older green Honda Civic fired numerous shots at the family while driving on Da Vall Drive just before 6:30 p.m.

Fortunately nobody was hit during the shooting.

Officers in an unmarked police car spotted the suspects driving near Date Palm Drive and McCallum Way. They tailed the car on westbound I-10 while waiting for backup but the suspects began driving erratically when they apparently spotted the officers following them.

The officers gave chase and the suspects took the Palm Drive exit, heading north toward Desert Hot Springs at speeds upwards of 70 MPH. Police turned on their emergency lights and the driver failed to yield while turning eastbound on 20th Avenue.

Police said the driver continued to run several stop signs as he turned north on Mountain View Road and then headed westbound on Club House Drive, which dead ends into the desert.

The suspects continued speeding through the desert, at which time officers decided to discontinue the pursuit for safety reasons. The two men are still on the run and police haven’t located the Honda Civic.

However, police did find a loaded handgun on the road where the suspects entered the desert.

Anybody with information about the shooting, or the suspects, is asked to call the Cathedral City Police Department at (760) 770-0303. The investigation is ongoing and News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 will continue to keep you updated as more details become available.
