Woman killed in wrong-way crash on I-10

A woman was killed after crashing her BMW head-on into a Ford Econoline van while she was driving on the wrong side of I-10 early Wednesday morning.

According to Officer Mike Radford with the California Highway Patrol, the collision happened at about 4:23 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of the interstate, just east of Dillon Road.

The woman, who hasn’t been identified yet, was driving a 2004 BMW 330 sedan westbound on the eastbound side of the freeway. Radford said 56-year-old Albino Serna from Indio was driving the van eastbound when he approached the BMW in the left lane.

The two vehicles collided, causing major damage. The woman driving the BMW died at the scene. Radford said there was a total of eight people in the Ford and three of them were taken to Desert Regional Medical Center with minor to major injuries.

Initial reports stated the van was carrying seven prison guards.
