29 Palms Marine arrested after baby left comatose

A Marine stationed at the 29 Palms Marine Corps Base is facing charges of assaulting his girlfriend’s 5 1/2-month-old daughter, leaving her in a comatose state.

The infant was taken to High Desert Medical Center in a coma on Wednesday, November 19, suffering from a brain hemorrhage, according to officials with the Morongo Basin Sheriff’s Department. The baby was then flown to Loma Linda Medical University Children’s Hospital.

Doctors said she was in a comatose state as a result of her injuries. Detectives from the Crimes Against Children unit were called to investigate.

Through the investigation, deputies identified the suspect as 24-year-old John Rafeal Jeter, the boyfriend of the infant’s mother.

Jeter was arrested on November 21 after being interviewed by investigators.

He was booked into the Central Detention Center in San Bernardino for assault resulting in death, comatose state, or paralysis of a child under eight years of age.

Jeter is being held on $500,000 bail. He’s scheduled to be arraigned on December 9 in Morongo Basin Superior Court, according to the sheriff’s release.

Anyone with information that could assist with the investigation is asked to call Detective Jacob Gault or Sergeant Dana Foster at (909) 387-3651.

News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 will post more details as the investigation moves forward.
