Los Angeles police shot and killed a suspect armed with a knife in the heart of the Hollywood tourist district.

The shooting occurred about 7 p.m. Friday after the Los Angeles Police Department received a report of an assault with a deadly weapon.

LAPD spokeswoman Meghan Aguilar says the man had a knife and was shot while he was approaching officers.

Police say he was taken to a hospital in critical condition and later died.
