Ironman athletes test their limits in the Coachella Valley

Hundred of endurance athletes have taken over parts of La Quinta and Indio for the HITS Triathlon Series.

On Saturday morning, more than 650 athletes plunged into chilly Lake Cahuilla for the first leg of the Ironman and half Ironman races. The full Ironman is a total of 140.6 miles, and the half Ironman is 70.3 miles spread between swimming, biking and running.

One of the half Ironman finishers included our own Sally Saputo, who works behind the scenes making all of us here at CBS Local 2 look good. She has been training for months.

We caught up with her before the race to see how she was feeling.

“Lots of nerves, excited, nervous, I’m scared, I’m inspired, there’s a lot going on, a lot to see.”

The full Ironman race wrapped up Saturday night, with many athletes expected to finish late in the evening.

A big congratulations to Sally and to all of the participants.
