Shops in Cathedral City are trying to be proactive when it comes to staying safe.

“I don’t normally come out here at night the only time I’ll do that is if my son comes with me,” says Carol Wilsey of Cathedral City.

“I don’t remember it being that way,” says Wilsey. “My husband I moved out here in 2001 and it just seems like it’s getting worse all the time.”

“Make sure if you are going out shopping to have someone join you park as close as possible to your destination, under a well lit area,” says Deputy Armando Munoz with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. “Make sure that you do not leave anything visible in your car,” says Munoz.

If you get approached by a thief there are things you can do to try and stay safe.

“If you are by yourself, use your horn on your car to make some noise, or if you have to yell if someone is trying to grab you or take something from you,” says Munoz. “Bring some attention to yourself so someone in the area can help you or this suspect can get frightened and leave,” says Munoz.
