Students encourage positivity on Palm Springs streets

Two Coachella Valley schools will participate in the nationwide “Happiness Sprinkling” campaign this week.

Tuesday morning, students and staff from the Palm Springs Community School wore yellow shirts and held signs with positive messages at Baristo Rd. and Sunrise Way.

“‘Why not?’, ‘go for peace’, ‘you are a good parent’, and ‘you are all beautiful’,” reads teacher Ann Vlcek, “It really shows them they are important and they can have a positive impact.”

The Happiness Sprinkling campaign, which was started in 2012, is meant to lift the spirits of people and drivers. Many honked and waved in solidarity with the effort, Tuesday.

The signs are shipped from one location to the next. Events have been held around the United States and Canada and are scheduled in other locations in Riverside County this month, according to the county education office.

One sign even read ‘Free Hugs’, and people like Beverly Garrett from Desert Hot Springs took advantage.

“I think it’s wonderful…. I think it’s wonderful,” Garrett said. “I just seen you guys here, and he said free hugs, and I wanted one.”

Austin Berry, a junior at the school, advised, “Find something that makes you happy. Do something that makes you happy. And have a Merry Christmas.”

The project will move to Indio on Friday, barring inclement weather, from 1 – 2:15 p.m. near the intersection of Avenue 48 and Oasis Street.
