54-year-old woman arrested for vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated

A 54-year-old woman from Indio was arrested Tuesday in connection to a deadly crash that killed her husband on October 22 in Coachella.

Candelaria Castillo was located by the Coachella Community Action Team and arrested in the 83000 block of Cardinal Avenue, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

She was booked into the Indio Jail on charges of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. The crash occurred in the area of Avenue 50 and Fillmore Street.

According to the coroner’s office, Candelaria crashed a Honda into a tractor at about 7 p.m. that night while driving westbound on Avenue 50. Her husband Felipe Castillo, 73, was a passenger in the car. He was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center in serious condition but died from his injuries six days later.

Candelaria and the driver of the tractor both sustained minor injuries in the crash.

The sheriff’s department said Candelaria’s bail has been set at $100,000.

The crash was under investigation by the Coachella Police Department and the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
