Man arrested after trying to flee DUI checkpoint

A 20-year-old man from Indio was arrested Thursday night for reckless driving, hit and run, driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, and for driving without a valid driver’s license after he tried to evade officers at a DUI checkpoint.

The Coachella Police Department was conducting a DUI/Safety checkpoint near Avenue 48 and Jackson Street from 7 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. when the incident occurred.

According to police, Oscar Armando Ramirez-Beltran was seen driving recklessly near the checkpoint. He then hit an unoccupied, parked vehicle while attempting to evade officers. Nobody was injured during the incident.

Ramirez-Beltran was booked into the Riverside County Jail in Indio.

Approximately 612 vehicles passed through the checkpoint
Twenty-two vehicles were diverted to secondary screening
Two field sobriety tests were conducted
One driver was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs
One driver was arrested for a misdemeanor driving under the influence warrant
Six drivers were cited for driving without a valid driver’s license
Five drivers were cited for driving on a suspended license
Three vehicles were towed or stored
