Suspect identified in deadly Coachella officer involved shooting

One person is dead after an officer involved shooting in Coachella. The incident happened around 11:30 a.m. Thursday in the area of Calhoun Street and Shadowrock Drive near Avenue 50.

The suspect was identified Friday as 35-year-old Omar Rodriguez of Coachella.

Officials from the Sheriff’s Department said an altercation took place between a female deputy and the suspect. Rodriguezreportedly fought with the deputy who was in the area responding to a report of a “suspicious person” in the area.

Rodriguez tried to take the deputy’s baton and that’s when she shot the suspect, says Sgt. Manning of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. The deputy was not injured in the altercation.
