C.C.P.D. evacuated after elderly couple brings in grenade

The Cathedral City Police Department and City Hall were both evacuated as a precaution Wednesday afternoon when an elderly couple brought in a grenade they found in their late son’s belongings.

The evacuations were ordered around 1 p.m. when the couple arrived to the police department.

Officers with the bomb squad determined the explosive device wasn’t active and let all employees return to work at 3 p.m.

The couple’s late son lived on the 200 block of Centennial Street in the Rancho Mirage Mobile Home Park. The bomb squad returned to the house shortly after 3 p.m. to see if there were any other suspicious explosive devices in his belongings, but nothing else was discovered in the home.

They left the home around 3:40 p.m.
