$42.3M construction contract approved for Jefferson Street interchange

A modernized Jefferson Street freeway interchange that’s expected to improve mobility and ease traffic issues in and around Indio is set to begin construction this spring.

According to a release from Riverside County Supervisor John Benoit, the $42.3 million construction project was approved Tuesday. The Board of Supervisors voted 4-0 to award the project to Riverside Construction Company, Inc. of Riverside.

The bid came in nearly $13 million (23 percent) below the engineer’s estimate, translating into substantial savings for local governments and taxpayers, Benoit stated in the release.

“The Jefferson Street interchange project will significantly improve traffic flow at one of our valley’s most important arteries,” said Benoit. “Today is a momentous day to award the contract and move this project forward to construction.”

The Jefferson Street/Interstate 10 Interchange Project will replace the existing Jefferson Street bridge and northbound Indio Boulevard overcrossing with a single bridge to consolidate traffic entering and exiting Interstate 10 from both directions, according to the release.

The new eight-lane bridge will include bicycle lanes in both directions and a sidewalk on the northbound side of Jefferson Street. The Riverside County Transportation Department is the lead agency for the project and is working in partnership with the City of Indio and Coachella Valley Association of Governments.
