Traffic nightmare: Early AM accidents delay thousands heading home from “Coachella”

Officers have reopened all lanes of westbound I-10 after a four-vehicle crash forced the California Highway Patrol to shut down three lanes of the interstate for about an hour and a half Monday morning.

Officers responded to the crash just after 10 a.m.

It happened about one mile east of Indian Canyon Drive. The No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 lanes were all shut down as emergency crews responded to the crash.

Westbound traffic on the interstate was bumper-to-bumper from Banning to Indio.

According to Cal Fire, five people sustained minor injuries in the crash and one person was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

CHP diverted traffic through the No. 4 lane while they cleared the scene.

Plenty of commuters were leaving the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival as weekend one wrapped up, making traffic congestion even worse at the time.

News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 will deliver updates as CHP continues to investigate the crash.
