Driver says SUV surged, continued accelerating into wall

A woman crashed a brand new SUV into a wall at a Chevron Gas Station in Desert Hot Springs Thursday morning, and she said it happened after her vehicle surged and continued accelerating as she pulled into a parking space.

Viewer Bud Ethridge took photos at the scene of the crash around 10:45 a.m.

The collision happened near the intersection of Palm Drive and 2 Bunch Palms Trail. The driver contacted KESQ and CBS Local 2 and she said she wasn’t injured but was shaken up in the crash.

She also said her Toyota 4-Runner is undergoing a computer check to determine the problem. She knows other Toyota models have experienced issues in recent years regarding the accelerator sticking, so she thinks that may have played a role.

We’re keeping in touch with the woman to learn the results of the computer check and we’ll post more details as soon as we hear from her.
